The United States popular auto giant company, General Motors, is recalling about 121,000 Cadillac ATS sedans in the country for a possible fire risk that is associated with the rear window defroster control. GM says that the 2013 to 2016 model year Cadillac sedan vehicles might have a faulty electrical connection in the coil antenna module that is used to power the rear defroster. This can cause fires risk which can turn out to be fatal or risky at times. GM does not want to risk with the possible electric connection fault in Cadillac and has decided to recall about 121,000 Cadillacs in the U.S.
The automaker has said that the company is aware of four such incidents where fires were related to the defroster defect. But, there have not been any crashes or deaths or injuries to the driver and the passenger due to the defect in the electric connection.
GM has said that the rear window defrosters in the Cadillac ATS sedans in the model year from 2013 to 2016 can get overheated due to the ‘weak terminal connectivity in the coil antenna module’. This is what powers the rear window defroster. This overheat can cause fires in the rear pillar on the driver’s side upon continued use.
General Motors has said that the dealers of the company will update the climate control software in all the affected Cadillac sedans. They will be removing the feature that will turn the defroster automatically on. The vehicles that are manufactured after September 2 will not need to undergo the change.
As many as 97,000 Cadillac ATS cars sold in the U.S are part of the total recall of 121,000 cars. The remaining 24,000 are from outside the country that also includes Mexico and Canada.
This is not the first time that GM is initiating a recall of the Cadillac ATS cars. GM had earlier recalled the 2013 to 2016 model Cadillac ATS sedans for power sunroof issues. The first recall of the Cadillac ATS sedans took place in February this year when 67,000 cars were called up for the same power sunroof issue.
The Cadillac ATS sedan is the second most popular car offered by GM after the SRX crossover. The sales of the ATS sedans have seen a drop of13% in August. GM will have to rectify the rear defroster problems as soon as possible in order to win the trust of customers.
