The Woodie’s DIY Masters Championships of Ireland, which took place in Tullamore on the 16th of August last, was, by all accounts, a brilliant success writes The Extra Miler.
There were some genuinely high-quality performances on the day. ‘Super Vet’, Martin McEvilly, of Galway City Harriers ran up to his usual exemplary standard in taking Gold medals over 400m, 800m and 1,500m. Martin had only recently returned from the World Masters Athletic Championships in Finland where he had claimed a bronze medal for Ireland in the M60 2,000m steeplechase.
It was interesting to note that four-time national marathon champion, Gary Crossan of Letterkenny AC, finished second in the V1 800m. Looking down through the rest of the results there were some startling performances including one from Pat Naughton of Nenagh Olympic AC who recorded a jump of 1.15m in the high jump. Pat competes in the V9 category which means that he is over 75 years young.
