- A good fry-up always works well. The closer to the gun, the better. We recommend carrying one to the starting-line if possible. A true friend will line up a top-up halfway around too.
- No sleep the night before – still one of the hardest ones to beat. If you’re travelling more than 50 miles for the race, you are obliged to follow this protocol. Failure to do so could lead to a good performance.
- Forget to pack your favourite shorts.
- Forget to pack any shorts.
- ABSOLUTELY DON’T STRETCH. What are you thinking of? If you’re not careful with that stuff, off you’ll go and achieve a PB. Where would you be then?
- Sign-on late.
- A flapping race number is a great nuisance. We recommend it every time.
- Go off with the Kenyans at the start. See how far you get. Added bonus is you might get your picture in the newspapers.
- Talk like mad from start to finish. Maybe even break into song. Wave to locals. Spend all your energy in this way and you’re well on the way.
- And, the oldest trick in the book, don’t train. This one will not be beaten.
