David Gillick of Dundrum South Dublin will open his Indoor Season over 400m at the Aviva Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham this Saturday. Gillick will compete against Ricardo Chambers of Jamaica and Jamaal Torrance, USA.
Derval O’Rourke (Leevale AC) will line up in the Women’s 60m Hurdles against Great Britain’s Jessica Ennis. O’Rourke will be looking to improve on her seasonal best of 8.11 seconds she ran when winning the UK Championships last weekend.
In the Women’s Long Jump, in form Kelly Proper of Ferrybank AC will go head to head with some talented jumpers including Yargelis Savigne of Cuba.
Former Irish 400m Record Holder, Karen Shinkins will act as pacemaker in the Women’s Mile with Kelly McNiece acting as pacemaker in the Women’s 2 Mile.
Elsewhere Brian Gregan of Clonliffe Harriers became the latest Irish athlete to achieve the qualification standard for the World Indoor championships in Doha, Qatar next month. Gregan had a superb second place finish in Vienna last night. His time of 46.68 for 400m was a huge improvement on his previous indoor best of 47.57 set at the Woodie’s DIY Irish indoor championships.
Ailis McSweeney (Leevale AC) had an excellent run with a second place finish in the 60m in a time of 7.43 to lift her to second in this season’s Irish ranking lists behind Claire Brady
