Today ethicalrunner tweeted the following:

Wexford half marathon have cut their entry fee…the half / marathon market is getting over cooked – interesting to see who survives…..

So, we followed by tweeting this to get more reaction:

See tweet from ethical runner re half-marathon market over-cooked. Yes or no? Let us know. We will print views. http://bit.ly/drqPBF

And here are the reactions we got:

racepix365 @ethicalrunner Not surprising really – Wexford, Bantry, Dundalk, Kildare halves, Limerick races and Belfast marathon all within a few days

krustyclown2001 @ethicalrunner It’s good to see these races finally going in the right direction. Connemara – Great value in the Ultra, but the half @€70?

ethicalrunner @krustyclown2001 @racepix365 @rundirectmag there are ones in wicklow in may, contarf in june, cliffs of moher in sept?

ethicalrunner @krustyclown2001 i’m down for the half in connemara and i’m not even going to be flat-out racing it (!)…ah well, another blue t-shirt…

krustyclown2001 @ethicalrunner Mad! Lahinch to Doolin would be downhill, but the other way?. There be madness. Don’t forget the Burren marathon in May (€25).

Email from Steven Smith:

I’m afraid to say entry fees for marathon and other races in Ireland are over-priced, compared to Europe… Antwerp Marathon in April cost me €40, full entry.
I really wanted to enter Wexford but the price put me off. Also, the Great Limerick Run is way too steep. I know most of the fee will go to a good cause, but it’s still very steep, particularly if you enter late.

I will enter Dublin Marathon, and three smaller events in the Dublin series – 5k, 10k, and Half-Marathon in the Phoenix Park – it’s cheap to book all of these together.

I will also do Cork Marathon, and would love to do five or six more races around Ireland but they cost too much.

Further tweets:

Richardjcronin @RunDirectMag Some of them are (halfs) are charging crazy money so a reduction is timely – not an indication of market over supplied.

  1. Brighid says:

The prices of half marathons and marathons are extortionate. Paid €60 Euro for Achill and got a medal and a run in return. Nothing wrong with a few euro for charity and a few euro for the organiser but there does seem to be excessive profiteering taking place

  2. sheila devaney says:

yes I totally agree, refused to enter Achill based on the price, about €30 should be plenty. I did the Scottish half recently for £30, even with exchange rates it was much better value!
