Following on the heels of Mitsubishi Lancer recalls, now Hyundai will be recalling its popular Hyundai Sonata cars for engine replacement. More than 470,000 Hyundai Sonata cars sold in the United States will be recalled by the South Korean giant car maker. There is an engine manufacturing problem that has been noted in the Hyundai Sonata cars that might cause the engine to fail.
Hyundai has made back to back recalls yesterday morning of nearly 570,000 vehicles running in the U.S. The 2011-12 Hyundai Sonata might be suffering from a major engine problem that needs to be fixed by the company as soon as possible, was the bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The news also reads that 2009 – 11 Hyundai Accents are also being recalled by Hyundai to correct an issue in its lighting system that can cause problems in a few of the light bulbs.
The main recall, though, is the 470,000 Sonata cars that might be suffering from a serious engine problem. The metallic debris might not have been fully removed when Hyundai was manufacturing the crankshaft of the Sonata engine. If the debris has not been completely removed, it can restrict the oil flow through the rod bearing that connect to the engine and thereby damage the rod.
It is not a good experience for a driver to feel if the rod is broken. This is a recipe for a serious calamity as it can easily cause damage to the engine. It can cause lots of smoke and finally engine failure that will leave the vehicle stalled. The vehicle cannot be restarted again.
The sonata vehicles manufactured from December 11, 2009 to April 12, 2011 are the ones recalled. They are fitted with a 2.0 liter and 2.4 liter direct injection engines under their hood that runs on gasoline. All the engines that are manufactured during the period were built at Hyundai’s Alabama plant.
Each of the 470,000 Sonata vehicles will be recalled and will be inspected by the Hyundai dealer. If necessary, the engine of the Sonata will be replaced free of charge. Hyundai will also be boosting the warranty protections of the engine sub assembly on all the affected engines for 120,000 miles or 10 years. This extension will apply to the original owner of the Sonata car or even if it is a second hand car.
Hyundai will be mailing interim notices to the Sonata car owners from November 2nd.
