How to choose your gutter?

how to select the best rain gutter

The gutter is an essential element of the roof because it allows evacuating and even recovers the rainwater that trickles from the roof and thus protects the walls of the house against water infiltration. Whether you are building your rainwater recovery system or you need to change or repair your gutter, the task is almost within everyone’s reach.

Distriartisan gives you some tips and practical tips to choose your gutter among the different types and materials that can be found on the market and depending on the characteristics of your roof or the architectural heritage of your region.

Gutters dangling or creeping?

The gutters are classified into two main groups according to their shape, but also according to their method of attachment: the hanging gutters and creeping gutters.

1. The hanging gutters

These are the most common models because they can be installed almost everywhere, they come in several forms – square, round, molded (also called cornice gutter) – and several materials: zinc, aluminum, steel, PVC, copper.

The hanging gutters are fixed by hooks at the end of the rafters of the frame, on a board of edge, directly on the cover (tiles, steel tank, fiber-cement), or in the masonry (Genoise).

Their strong point is that it is possible to install them on any type of roof covering.

Below are some examples of hanging gutters:

– Half round gutters  :
The most standard model that is perfect for individual homes, wide and scalable range (materials, colors, dimensions).

– Square gutters  :

More rustic model dedicated to imposing buildings.

– Molded gutters  :

A specific style – basic square section with moldings on the exposed side – present on the old facades and the old houses.

– Cornice shape gutters  :

Elegantly contributes to modern architectures, ideal for contemporary single-family houses.

2. The creeping gutters

They are more discreet as they rest on the cornice or part of the roof. They are preferred if the slope of your roof is important and are not adaptable to all homes.

This type of gutter is available in several regional models:

– The gutter of Nantes:

Very aesthetic profile, raised at a right angle, fixed on the rampant or the cornice of the roof.

– The Aveyron gutter:

Looks like the gutter of Nantes with a rounded statement for a more classic but discreet profile.

Main criteria for choosing a gutter

1. Rainfall

Annual rainfall is a determining factor in the choice of a gutter because it will determine the development of gutters that are directly related to their ability to collect rainwater. The greater the development of the gutter, the better will be the capacity of collection and evacuation of rainwater, which are more abundant in the South than in the North.

Good to know :

The development of a gutter is the width of the sheet of metal used to make a gutter. Thus a “gutter of 25” comes from a sheet of 25 cm wide. This calculation applies to all gutter materials and shapes. The most common developments are 25 and 33 cm.

2. The surface of the roof

The surface of the roof is also a determining factor in choosing the development of the gutters because the larger the area, the more important the volume of water to collect.

Check below the correspondence table that gives the development of your gutters based on the projected surface of your flat roof.

The surface of the roof will also determine the number of downpipes. Count around one gutter down every 12 to 15 linear meters.

3. The slope of your roof

The slope is also an element to take into account: in fact, the higher the slope, the smaller the water surface to be evacuated. The good flow requires a slope of 5 to 20 mm / m².

Gutter materials: choose from 5 possibilities

Each material detailed below has specific properties in terms of resistance to shock, temperature, load, and it is important to take them into consideration because they will impact the longevity of the gutters and therefore the protection of your building.

It is important to choose the material that best suits the configuration of your home, your roof, but also according to the climate.

Zinc Gutter  :

– This is the most used, especially for its traditional character.

Natural material, recyclable and efficient. Very resistant to corrosion and severe climates.

– Installation: by interlocking with silicone sealant or welding.

– Life span: 30 to 40 years.

Note:  Nine, its appearance is a rather shiny metallic. As you get older, the zinc takes on a patina of elegant matte light gray color. Very good sealing.

Wide and evolutionary range of shapes and dimensions  :

Half-round: the most common, it is a hanging gutter found in all developments (16, 25, 33 and 40 cm and lengths of 2m and 4m)

Example: Half round zinc gutter

Square (pending),

Example: Gutter Square zinc development 33 cm in 4 meters

Molded (pendant),

Example: Molded zinc gutter  development 33 cm and 4 meters

– Gutter zinc Nantes (creeping),

Example: Zinc gutter

Havre zinc gutter (creeping).

Aluminum Gutter  :

Increasingly restrained, it is light and practical.  Aesthetic material is resistant to cold and aging.

– Installation: by embedding with a seamless connection, sealing with silicone sealant.

– Lifetime: 20 years and over.

To note: available in more than 25 colors, it is simple to maintain.

The aluminum gutters are aesthetically pleasing thanks to their contemporary molded cornice shape and adapt to all roofs and facades with their wide range of colors.

The most classic profile is the development of 30 cm molded cornice shape.

Example: Aluminum Gutter

Gutter Steel :

– Known as the most solid gutter.

– Material: steel coated with zinc (or a zinc alloy) which offers good resistance to corrosion. Premium lacquering quality.

– Installation: interlocking without solder or sealant, integrated EPDM seals.

– Life span: 30 to 40 years.

Some manufacturers, such as Sweden’s Lindab, manufacture lacquered steel gutters available in several designs and colors for optimal adaptation to roofs and facades.

PVC Gutter:

– Very economical, it is, however, a little less resistant due to the expansion or contraction of PVC which can end up cracking when subjected to intense cold.

Soft and lightweight material that does not fear corrosion.

– Installation: gluing or interlocking with PVC seal.

– Lifetime: 15 years.

The dimensions of PVC gutters are variable: diameter 60, 80, and 100 and development of 160, 250 or 330 for standard lengths of 2 or 4 meters.

Wide and progressive range :

Half round PVC gutters  (available in all developments)

Gutter PVC cornice.

Copper Gutter:

– Gutter the noblest, but also the most expensive.

Malleable material that works easily. It takes a beautiful patina over time and is very resistant to corrosion and severe climates.

– Installation: by welding or interlocking.

– Lifespan: more than 50 years old.

Good to know  :

Whether in the event of the renovation of your rainwater drainage system or in the context of new construction, remember to consult your local urban plan which may impose a specific type of gutter (material or form ). The zinc gutters are those usually imposed time.
