Five Functions in Good Toaster
Here are the 5 different functions to look for when choosing a good toaster:
The thermostat: While some toasters only have a single thermostat with powers of 1 to 6 for example, some models offer levels of toasting bread, in order to adjust: the internal cooking and the external grill. This avoids having brown toast on the outside, but not cooked enough inside. This type of model actually manages the distance between the bread and the grill, not just the power.
Slots: you have to look at three things: the number of slits, their lengths, and their thicknesses. For the number, you will have the choice between 1,2 or 4, to adapt according to the size of your family or your appetite. The 1- slice toasters are longer to insert 2 slices of sandwich bread side-by-side, while the 2 or 4- slice toasters have separate, but shorter, compartments. So it will not be possible to insert long slices of baguette for example. For the thickness, apart from the standard size, there are 2 other thicknesses: 28 and 38mm, proposed in particular by the brands Dualit and Magimix.
The extra high lift: we assume that if you read these lines, it is certain that you have already burned your hands many times while trying to catch your toast. Well, the manufacturers have included on some models extra-high lifts that allow you to catch your slices of bread without having to plunge his fingers inside.
The crumb tray: very useful too, it will save you from having to flip your device to collect crumbs!
Defrost function: convenient for defrosting your bread gently, this function adapts the heating mode to freeze the bread.
How to choose your toaster?
You are surely told that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”. So, well, even if you want to have breakfast, get off to a good start by having some toast out of bed, accompanied by a good coffee, do not you think?
But which toaster to choose? We find all sizes, all design, full options or rudimentary …
With the items I give you, you will find the toaster that will put you in a good mood for the whole day!
The different types of toasters
The type of toaster that you need depends essentially on what you answer to the following questions: How much bread do you want to grill? What space do you want to devote to the toaster? Do you want a toaster that does more than grill bread? Is the appearance of the toaster important to you?
For domestic use, there are two types of toasters: the classic self-ejecting model and the toaster oven.
Automatic ejection toasters
That’s what comes to mind when you say toaster: the machine, there, with slots above where you introduce slices of bread, which “jump” automatically once grilled.
As impatient as you are, it is certainly the model that you need, especially if you are in a hurry and hungry! The advantage of this model of a toaster is also the space saving and the price more than affordable.
Most vertical toasters on the market have an automatic shutdown feature. And since then, you can choose from several styles and colors, not just the austere metal toaster that does not look like much.
This model adds to the toaster function other features, such as a real oven with which you can cook pizza, roast meat, prepare biscuits … Some devices are even convection.
If you opt for a toaster oven, consider the space that the appliance will occupy on the countertop of your kitchen. This can be a problem if you have a small kitchen: the more this type of appliance has the capacity, the more space it will occupy in the kitchen.
The heating elements located inside each slot of a toaster determine their level of browning. So before buying, I advise you to take a look inside these slots.
The trick is that the further away these elements are from each other, the less likely you are to have evenly toasted bread. As I said above, some toasters even have a device that allows them to adjust the browning intensity for both sides of the bread, in case you do not like it grilled on one side, just like me!
The more the wattage of your toaster is high, the faster it will grill your bread, even if the type of bread is also for many (a piece of bread or a multi-grain, it does not react the same way, we agree).
The optimum power level for a 2-slot toaster is 1200W and for a 4-slot appliance, it will be 1800W and up.
To save energy, you can try to see which slots are heating at the same time. Just use the slots you really need to increase the efficiency of your toaster and have even burnishing.
Quite simply, if you only grill one slice of bread and two slits are heated, one side of the slice of bread will be browner than the other.
A long life
This setting depends on the material quality of your toaster and how often it is cleaned. A toaster made from high-quality materials – so more expensive – will (in principle) have a longer life.
Some manufacturers even offer repair services, so think about this before making your choice. Likewise, keeping the crumb tray clean will certainly increase its lifespan.
Ease of use and cleaning
Most toasters are easy to use, even more so if you’ve put your finger on the exact settings that allow you to have the perfect level of burnishing. Having the right settings will make your life easier at breakfast.
But, and often, that’s where the stuck toast is the cleaning. Yes, you know, the little crumbs of toast that end up in the resistors or in the recesses of the device?
This is not only very frustrating but also (and unfortunately) very difficult, if not impossible to clean.
Some models include a removable crumb tray, which can be very convenient; I’ll tell you a little bit down, in the features available.
For others, well … good luck (and good fun)!
The interesting functions
Nowadays, toasters are no longer just “toast” bread, they have interesting features, such as defrosting or reheating. For the greediest, we can also find a specific function for bagels!
For you to see, of course, if these features will be useful, or if they are only “gadgets”, because often the price goes hand in hand!
This allows you to defrost and then toast bread that comes straight from the freezer. Toasters with this function first defrost the bread before starting a toasting cycle: practical when you have forgotten to go get bread at the bakery!
Slots of different sizes
Extra-wide or adjustable-thickness slots allow you to toast slices of bread thicker. These allow to grill / warm several varieties of bread, bagels, loaves of bread… Some toasters also have longer slots.
The removable crumb tray
This is the best way to remove crumbs from your toaster. A tray that can be removed from the front of the toaster is the best option because it can be emptied and cleaned when the toaster is still hot.
If the tray is removed from the back of the toaster, you will need to move or lift the appliance to access the crumb tray after the toaster has cooled down.
In any case, empty the garbage collector! For daily use of the toaster, opt for a weekly cleaning (empty and pass a little blow of paper towel to transfer the last recalcitrant crumbs). If like me, you use your toaster only occasionally, do it after use: it will prevent crumbs from sticking to the crumb tray!
The heating function
If you are one of those who put toast in the toaster and then forgets about it, you’re safe! This miraculous feature allows you to warm your toasts without necessarily re-toasting.
If you have not been able to eat your toast before it cools or if some of your toasts are not quite ready, the reheat function will take care of your slices of bread in a cycle of about a minute depending the device model.
The cable holder
For obvious safety reasons, it is always better to have a toaster with a system to store the power cable, to avoid it to drag on the counter of the kitchen.
Some toaster models have storage spikes underneath, while others have a retractable cable.
The bread raising system
Once the bread is toasted and ejected, this system allows operating a lever that raises the bread to be more easily accessible. Some high-end devices even carry a motorized lever. The other advantage of this function is that it allows you to have a glimpse of the browning of the bread before restarting the cycle if necessary.
The bagel function
As stated in its name, this feature allows you to toast bagel and other thicker pieces of bread that take longer than regular toast. Generally, by selecting this function, the toaster is able to automatically adjust the toasting time.
