Tennis fans can look forward to the US Open that will start from Monday. For the star players like Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams, the bid to claim the number one position will begin from the first day of the tournament itself. This is as per the organizers who have kept the top halves for both the women’s and the men’s games to be played out on the first day of the competition itself. This has pitted Serena Williams against Vitalia Diatchenko on the first day. Williams has gained the championship title as a defending champion three times and she is trying to achieve the Grand Slam in a calendar year akin to what Steffi Graf did in the year 1988.
Williams is on a high, having won her fourth title at Wimbledon last month and in this tournament she will be seeking to achieve the singles title in Grand Slam in this tournament. That will bring her at par with the achievements of Steffi Graf and bring her closer to achieving what Margaret Court had set, a record of 24 titles.
Among the men, Djokovic will also be seeking his second crown in this tournament and his opponent in the opening match will be Joao Souza from Brazil. Rafael Nadal is being seen as the quarterfinal opponent for Djokovic, who will also start the tournament on Monday and play against Borna Coric of Croatia.
The men’s category will see several other players, including Kei Nishikori of Japan who was a runner up in the US Open last year. Other players in the men’s category include Benoit Paire from France, Guido Pella from Argentina and Marin Cilic of Croatia. The quarter bracket for the women’s category will see Venus Williams, Serena’s older sister as well as Monic Puig from Puerto Rico, Maria Sharapova of Russia and others. For the women, the major contender to match up with would be Serena.
The timings of the matches for Monday are yet to be announced. The format of the game schedule has been changed this year. Usually the first three days of the tournament are kept for the men’s games and Super Saturdays are formed when the finals of the women and semifinals for the men are held. This time the format has been done away with. No matter what, a power packed Monday awaits the fans at the grounds of the US Open and on the screen this year and the consequent matches will definitely keep the fans hooked as before.
