There is going to be a fall in the prices of the drones in general. Qualcomm is the leading Smartphone chip developer in the world. The company has announced that it has come out with a new modified processor called Snapdragon Flight that will help in reducing the drone pricing in the future. The new integrated snapdragon powered flight platform is aimed at high end consumers and commercial drones that will make rather flying vehicles to be less complex and lighter.

The popular tech company announced that it has taken a step into the drone industry through its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies. This subsidiary will be hosting the Qualcomm Snapdragon Flight.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 To Be Used For Consumer Drone Applications

This Snapdragon flight is a single board that measures 58×40 mm and is seated on a system-on-chip that is made especially for the flying robots. Both the hardware and the software for flying the high end drones will be offered by Qualcomm.

The new Flight platform will support both 4K and 720p video recording with image enhancement, stabilization encoding, inertial measurement and optic flow for navigation. The platform will also support GPS navigation with obstacle avoidance feature. It will also have a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) for having real time flight control. You can also use extra sensors like barometer in the platform.

The computer board used in the Snapdragon Flight will be based on the Snapdragon 801 processor that is seen fitted in most of the high end Android smartphones. It will be coming out with a quad core 2.26 GHz processor, Qualcomm Hexagon DSP, built-in Adreno 330 graphics and dedicated video and image processing hardware. With dual band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and Global Navigation Satellite System receiver, the flight platform can be controlled from remote locations. This will also help in easy communications to take place.

The Quick change tech offered by Qualcomm ensures that it gets charged quickly between flights and hence it can be used for longer deployments. The Snapdragon 801 processor will make its first appearance in the Chinese Yuneec drone that will be going on sale in the markets in the first half of 2016.

The use of the Snapdragon Flight will reduce the weight and the size of the drone and thereby it will become more flexible and also offer longer flight times than before. The cost of the drones will also now come down, thanks to the new processor. If Qualcomm meets the requirements of the market, then it could become the leader in the energy efficient drone market.
